A Medical Unit Clerk (also known as a Medical Administrative Assistant or Unit Secretary) is an administrative professional who works in a healthcare setting, typically in a hospital or clinic. They are responsible for managing the administrative and clerical tasks for a specific medical unit, such as a patient ward or clinic.

Their duties include:

  • Answering phone calls and responding to inquiries

  • Scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records

  • Coordinating patient admissions and discharges

  • Transcribing and processing physician's orders

  • Assisting with medical billing and insurance claims

  • Ensuring that all the documents and patient files are up to date and accurate

To become a Medical Unit Clerk, most employer requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and on-the-job training is usually provided. Some employers may also require certification, which can be obtained through a formal training program or an exam. Medical Unit Clerks must have strong organizational skills and the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment. They must also be able to handle sensitive patient information with discretion and maintain patient confidentiality.
